From the West…
BREST
Like a finger, pointing towards
the ocean, the Brittany peninsula has always offered a real
Celtic charm and a special fascination. But unfortunately,
wars all too often disturbed the quietness of the Bretagne
countryside.
The naval base of Brest held
a strategic position and saw the American Expeditionary Forces
passing through in 1917-18.
In 1940, the German troops
used this port for their U-Boats. Brest then became an impregnable
strongpoint and it cost the commitment of several American
units for more than 1 month to reach the town. From 7 August
to 18 September, the battles were terrible and several thousands
of GI’s were killed in action. The town was completely
destroyed before its liberation.

SAINT-MALO
Saint-Malo is a Brittany port
full of the history of pirates and bounty hunters.
The origins of the French
Navy can’t be dissociated from this ancient port. During
the Second World War, the 83rd US Infantry Division laid
siege to the town forcing the Germans to surrender but only
after intensive fights and bombing.
This site has now recovered
all its former magnificence and splendour.

MONT-SAINT-MICHEL
It is impossible to leave
out this marvellous and mystical place. In 709 Aubert, Bishop
of Avranches, planned to build a first church after the Archangel
Saint-Michel appeared to him.
Centuries of history and enigmatic
accounts will be narrated by a guide of Mt-St-Michel.

…to the East.
Crossing Aisne-Marne countries
(click on Champagne), to Bastogne.
Time of the last chance for
Hitler… On 16 December 1944 at 3 am, between Aix-la-Chapelle
and Luxembourg, the Ardennes Forest was embroiled in conflict.
According to some very smart
plans, the last strength of the 3rd Reich was launched in
a counter offensive to split the American and British forces.
The start point was the Bastogne area and the objective Anvers.
“West to East” is
